Arrived Thursday evening after saying goodbye to Ellen in Gatwick (Vancouver bound). Very tired trip in the Alilaguna water bus to San Marco. Quick check-in at the hotel (Hotel Monte Carlo) just seconds from St Marks Square and off for a quick glass of (expensive) red wine.

On Friday we visited  St Marks Basilica – using the raised walkways to keep us above the flooded piazza and the Doge’s palace (practically had the place to ourselves). Proceeded to walk for another 10 miles in the freezing cold but what an amazing place. Started to snow on Friday night.

Saturday dawned in a blanket of fog. Walked out to the Arsenale to visit the parks at that end of the “island” and a pointless ship museum. But at least the sun came out. Took an ACTV taxi up the grand canal, visited the railway station and had a great afternoon walking back through Castello and Rialto. Lovely meal followed by a visit to the off-the-wall American Bar.

Sunday toook the Alilaguna bus back to the airport (at least this time we could see the views) and flew back in to Edinburgh for peanuts (well done EasyJet).

Definitely worth a visit.
